So you think you have storage problems in your home? The Olympics has bigger fish to fry. With a workforce of nearly 2,000 working in the logistics department of Rio 2016, it is clear that the storage needed for this mammoth sporting event requires a huge amount of effort. Two warehouses—15,000 sqm and 90,000 sqm in size, respectively—are being used to keep all the materials needed for the Games. According to the Olympics’ official website, it will use “about 32,000 tennis balls, 400 footballs, 8,400 shuttlecocks, 250 golf carts, and 54 boats.” This is the tip of the iceberg!
Game of Thrown Equipment (or Not)
The organizers of the 2016 Olympics cannot just throw this equipment anywhere they like; the logistical process of sorting and storing the materials needed for the Games is a well-thought-out operation. Preparations for the logistical side of the Olympic Games have been going on for a long time now. According to Maurício Gonçalves, Director of Logistics: “The greatest challenge was to plan and implement all the warehouse processes and procedures.” The logistics team started with nothing, and built the whole system from the ground up: registering, recording, stocking, and delivering everything, among other duties. It sounds like a coordination puzzle.
The Athletes’ Village
The athletes’ village for Rio 2016 is the biggest the Olympics has ever seen. “Fittings will include about 80,000 chairs, 70,000 tables, 29,000 mattresses, 60,000 clothes hangers, 6,000 television sets, and 10,000 smartphones.” Crazy. As with any Summer Olympics, it is expected that the Olympic athletes will be “treated like kings.” In the case of Rio, the village will be even more impressive than ever, providing the competitors with every amenity and treat they could possibly imagine. Every athlete will be given a brand new phone, free of charge, and athletes will even be able to go and see a beautician on site for a manicure before their big race. The athletes’ bedrooms are as spacious as possible so that they get a good night’s rest before competing for their country.
