Las Piñas was once established as a fishing port as it was major sea salt-producing municipality during the Spanish era. At present, the city has bloomed to be a suburb with the growth of industrial, commercial, and residential communities. |
The name “Las Piñas” has variety of versions. One popular story is that its name came from the Piñas or pineapples that the traders from Cavite and Batangas shipped to this place. Another version is that it was once named as Las Penas, which meant “the rocks” as quarrying of stones and adobe were once done in the place. An old church bell from St. Joseph Parish Church can provide evident that the place was once named as Las Penas since it has an inscription that states, “Siendo cura del pueblo de Laspeñas el M.R.P. Padre Diego Cera se fundió este equilón año de 1820.” Las Piñas was also once part of Paranaque and about 1,200 inhabitants were the first to settle in the area. These inhabitants were brought here by the Spanish missionary Fr. Diego Cera.
Las Piñas was once the salt center since the Manila Bay lies in the northwest. This was also fueled by the construction of the Las Piñas Church in 1819, the six-year construction of the bamboo organ, as well as the building of roads and bridges. Salt production boomed as well as dye making and handicrafts. Fast forwarding to the 1960s, Las Piñas became a first class municipality with the construction of the South Super Highways. In the 1980s, the construction of the Coastal Road boosted its economic growth as it became gateway to the CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon).
In February 12, 1997, President Fidel V. Ramos elevated the municipality into a city. As of 2015, Las Piñas is home to about 589,000 individuals. It is also the location of the Sarao Motors factory, a company that assembles the signature jeepneys of the Philippines. It is also in Las Piñas where the Robinsons Place Las Piñas and the 16-storey residential Almanza Metropolis are located. The city is also popular for its annual International Bamboo Organ Festival at St. Joseph Parish and home to London College of Music Examinations of the University of West London through the Saraza Music Center.
