The word Tacloban came from the word "Taklub", which means a basket-like contraption for catching fish. The city is well-known for its role in World War II, being a major base for the US forces and the first town liberated by Douglas MacArthur's forces from the Japanese Imperial Forces.

For some time, it has been served as the capital of the Philippines while Manila was still under the Japanese control. For several years, Tacloban was a barrio of Basey, Samar. During this time, the place was known as Kankabatok - meaning belonging to Kabatok, because its most prominent inhabitant was named Kabatok. The change of name came about in this idea: Kankabatok. It was said that it is a favorite haunt for fishermen. They would use a bamboo tray called "taklub" to catch crabs or shrimps. When asked where they were going the fishermen would answer, "to tarakluban", which meant the place where they used "taklub" to catch crabs. Later, the name was shortened to Tacloban.

While the city was known that gained a huge destruction from the Typhoon Haiyan, the city still has something to prove to all of us. One of them was the oldest shopping centers of Tacloban, which is the Gaisano Capital Mall. It was used to be the city’s only mall so it is not hard to locate. The famous San Juanico Bridge can also be found in Tacloban. Also includes in the tourist spots in Tacloban is the Santo Niño Church which is considered as the most important religious site in the province. Because the church houses the miraculous image of Sto. Niño which is the patron saint of Tacloban. The church was severely damaged due to Typhoon Haiyan.
