For a Better Online Profile: How to Write a Professional Bio

The new normal for professional networking is finding your online tribe. Amid the pandemic, where face-to-face, traditional gatherings have been halted, the need to form virtual connections has become more important than ever. This is especially true for those working in the real estate brokerage industry, which relies heavily on referrals for generating leads, as well as online positive testimonials.

In digital networking, a credible, professional image is the number one priority. This careful image-building starts with one simple, yet critical step: creating an excellent bio.

Revisit your About Me on professional networking sites, taking note of these tips as you write a new one:

Start with Your Name and Company Name

While professional and social networking sites would already have your name, it’s still worth including it in the About Me section. Remember, a bio is essentially a self-introduction, so it must bear your first and last name, as well as the nickname you would want colleagues to call you.

After your name, mention the name of the brokerage firm you’re employed at. If you’re working as a freelance agent, talk about your affiliation with real estate groups, such as the Real Estate Brokers Association of the Philippines. While the mention of the organization is primarily for informing external contacts about where you work or who you’re affiliated with, it also lends legitimacy to your online profile.

Here are some examples for stating your name and company name:

  • I am Ana Reyes, a licensed real estate broker who has been working for ABC Properties for 15 years.
  • Ana Reyes has been serving real estate clients at ABC Properties for 15 years.
  • Ana Reyes is among the top-performing real estate brokers of ABC Properties, serving clients with passion and excellence for 15 years.

Mention Your Current Work Role

After writing your name and the company name, state your job position. Provide details about what you do, starting with your primary responsibilities. Treat this section as answering the question, what’s a typical day like for you as a professional?

After discussing your role, share at least one accomplishment. If possible, provide figures. As you write, keep in mind the question, what have I accomplished that makes me a valuable professional? By diligently describing your work role, you can let fellow colleagues know that you’re committed to your profession.

Here are some examples for talking about your work role:

  • I help clients have a smooth property buying process, taking into account their needs and preferences every step of the way. In 2020, amid the pandemic, I was able to introduce an online system to our brokerage firm that would make inquiring for property information easier for clients.
  • With a zeal for client satisfaction, Ana Reyes considers property seekers’ needs to make sure that she finds the right property for them. She was named Broker of the Year in 2020 at the Lamudi Broker Awards, a testament to her professional excellence.

Talk about Your Career Values

Your external contacts will better understand your commitment to the practice when you state why you do what you do. It can also give them an idea of your character, which is as important as competence. As a writing guide for this section, keep in mind this question: what makes you get up in the morning and be good at your job?

Here are some examples for sharing your career values:

  • My number one priority as a real estate practitioner is to make my clients happy. This is why I value integrity, responsiveness, and persistence.
  • Ana Reyes channels exceptional devotion to clients. She’s committed to excellent communication and continuous learning to serve the market better.

Include Things You Do Outside Work

Aside from your profession as a real estate agent, share what you do when you’re not working. This adds a layer of topics you can talk about with colleagues.

Here are some examples for talking about your hobbies and interests:

  • When I’m not in the field doing open houses, I’m at home watching a good cartoon movie with my kids and husband. I love going to the beach and doing adventurous activities such as surfing and scuba diving.
  • Ana Reyes likes to spend time with her family in her free time. She loves to do crafts and bake cookies with her children.

Your networking efforts online have a higher chance of translating to business deals when you take that extra step of revamping your professional bio. In case you’re interested in connecting with professionals in person, make it a habit to go to Lamudi Link, Lamudi’s business networking night.
