Dubbed as the “City of Character,” one might find it suspect how Tagaytay came to have its assonant name. According to a folktale, the name is derived from a story about a father and his son. It was said that the two went out to hunt for a wild boar but then riot ensued and the wild boar attacked them. The son then shouted “taga!,” which means “cut” and then “Itay,” which denotes “father.” The panic-stricken son was apparently wary of his father being attacked by a wild boar he quickly implored the latter to kill the beast. Him shouting “Taga, Itay!” was so loud he was heard all over the place and thus the place was known to bear the name “Tagaytay” in remembrance of a caring son, fearing the demise of his father.
